I’ve wanted to join a Tribes & Treks excursion ever since I moved to the Philippines. Nearly two years later, I finally made it onto a tour. Was it worth the wait? Yes. Should I have gone sooner? Also yes.
My friends at @madtravel_ph (“Mad” stands for “make a difference”) and @thecirclehostel carefully developed the Tribes & Treks tour as an experiment in sustainable community tourism that would offer support to the Aetas, an indigenous people group who call the mountains of Zambales home, with the ambitious goal of harnessing responsible tourism to reforest 3000 hectares of land (about 11 square miles). Here’s the real scoop on @telastoryinc ‘s Kickstarter... 🙈😂 The “spokeswomen” in our video are friends of mine that I’ve employed as sewers for the past few years. The “models” are friends who were willing to help out. I recorded the audio on my phone sitting inside of a cupboard in my house with pillows pressed up against the door because my (very non-fancy) neighborhood is full of barking dogs and crowing roosters (i think you can actually faintly hear them in some sections of the audio, ha)... But man... our hearts are all full of hope and our brains are full of really solid plans and numbers that tell us we can make this thing succeed if we can just get a little funding to start off. I’m hoping that those elements are even more important than really pretty shiny marketing, and that there are a couple thousand people out there who are willing to join hands with garment workers and say “let’s build a better garment industry TOGETHER”. ❤️❤️❤️ Please be one of those people- don’t feel shy about giving at just the $5 or $8 level, if you can’t make a grandiose contribution. We need you!

This photo shows a pristine ocean drenched in golden sunlight. What you don’t see is the trash left behind by tourists on the beach (swipe over) that I’d just picked up. I sometimes lose my faith in humanity when I see litter. I don’t have any great ideas for how to change people’s mindsets end their trashy behaviour. As a kid, I feel like I just unconsciously learned not to throw trash on the ground through camping trips (my family always “packed out” any trash we created) and just generally loving nature and instinctively knowing that trash would harm my friends the animals, trees, and river. How do you talk to other adults about littering and single use plastic? Any great tips? 📷: @sidlantis
