When it comes to ethically made jewelry, it would seem that there is no shortage of options! It seems that I hear of a new, creative, amazing social enterprise almost weekly that's debuting a jewelry line. Jewelry was one of the first product categories that I began purchasing exclusively fair trade/ethically made when I first became a conscious consumer, simply because it was an easy first step to make (compare buying ethical jewelry only with buying ethical electronics only and you'll see what I mean).
However, most of the companies I follow (and, indeed, most of the ethically made jewelry that I own) would fall under the category of "costume jewelry". I have a fair-sized collection of pieces that include paper beads, glass beads, wooden beads, and semi-precious stones, but I have very few items that are made of silver, gold, or gems. Though I love all of my jewelry, my most-worn jewelry item is a pair of pearl stud earrings that I received from my Mother in law. They are simple, classic, coordinate with everything, and I know they will last for ages without going out of style. When Ethical fine jewelry company Bario Neal reached out to me and asked me if I'd be interested in reviewing a piece of jewelry I jumped at the chance to another beautiful, versatile piece of "fine" jewelry into my accessories lineup.
Bario Neal creates stunning rings, bracelets, hairpieces and more in their Philadelphia studio. All of the precious metals and gemstones used in their designs are either recycled or ethically sourced (you can read more about that on the Bario Neal website). I love that Bario Neal places an emphasis on empowering women through sourcing select stones through organizations like the Tanzania Women Miners Association.
I received a lovely pair of Bog earrings in silver (they're also available in rose and yellow gold). I've never been a "bling" sort of girl, being more drawn to simple, understated designs, and I appreciate the organic form and tiny size of this style.
Bario Neal will be participating in this month's big ethical giveaway, so make sure you're following along on Instagram to catch my announcement when the giveaway goes live!
