I met my friend Laura 6 months ago, by chance. I was trying to round up local ethically-minded business owners to participate in Minneapolis' Fashion Revolution Day, and one of my contacts gave me Laura's name. I shot over a quick email, and that same afternoon we found ourselves sitting across a table from each other at a coffee shop for a spontaneous meeting.
In about 10 minutes we had gotten past the usual and appropriate "nice to meet you" and "tell me about what you do" exchanges and were instantly deep in an intense conversation about politics, economics, trafficking, social business, and non-profits. I knew right away that Laura was a kindred spirit, fiery and intense in all the right sorts of ways.
Laura is an artist + entrepreneur who has always had a dream to own a little brick-and-mortar store selling products that do good. Earlier this year she decided to quit waiting and just get started- opening an online boutique called Flourish Art and Gifts. Laura now curates a lovely collection of fair trade and made in the USA home goods, decor, art and more!
I got artsy last week to shoot some of the beautiful products from Laura's shop in my home. I just couldn't resist the early morning light playing off of these raised embroidery on the 100% wool pillows (fair trade from Peru!).
The calming blue and greys of the Gabrielle and Nicole pillow covers were a lovely addition to my bedroom decor. I've seen and admired these pillows several times online, and it was fun to see them in real life! The wool is thick and heavy and substantial and the embroidery is gorgeous. When you think of the hours and hours of work that must have gone into these pieces, it makes them well worth their fair-wages price tag.
Another set of items I love are the new USA-made soy candles in the shop. They range from $8.00 to $30.00 so they're a super-affordable gift (the smallest ones could even be stocking stuffers for Christmas).
If you know someone who's a bit of an MLK or Pope Francis fangirl, there's a quote candle for that... I love the clean burning (palm free!) soy candle scents of this collection- and one of these candles would last for a long time!
Flourish Art and Gifts isn't really concerned with turning a huge profit. Laura's goal is to break even, do good, donate to some worthy charities, and maybe make a little spare change for the kids' college fund if all goes well. Each month, a different non-profit is chosen who will receive 20% of that month's sales. You can read about the model here!
